Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by John Gibson. This edition: pdf. 20th Century. 35 pages. JB Linear #11471. Published by JB Linear (A0.581508).
Rachmaninoff's "Little Red Riding Hood, Etudes-tableaux Opus 39 #6" (1917) set for clarinet choir. It is an amazing musical picture of an old story. The children's story of Little Red Riding Hood has a long history and Rachmaninoff's vivid musical story captures the sometimes frightening tale. You can hear the growling and biting of the wolf in an amazing musical chase. The sheet music comes with score and parts and was arranged by John Gibson. This piece was reviewed in the December, 2014 issue of The Clarinet (International Clarinet Association) by Gregory Barrett. .....From one of the greatest pianists of all time comes one of his more demanding concert etudes. Gibson uses similar instrumentation as in the...Bartok arrangement, but in addition to a fourth clarinet taking the place of alto clarinet, a second bass clarinet can be used. No alternate E-flat contra alto part is provided in place of B-flat contrabass. These low instruments set the tone of a growling wolf, and as a vehicle to feature your ensemble's heavy-weights this setting will do; however, a single player at a keyboard will be able to give a more cohesive performance than 100 or so fingers of a clarinet choir. But perhaps in the rarified air of clarinet choirs there is no boundary to what delights us. Instrumentation: Eb Soprano; Bb Clarinets 1, 2, and 3; alto (with alternate bass and Bb soprano parts); bass clarinet; BBb contrabass clarinet.
