These Drei Notturnos appeared in 1850 in two different versions: the first for high voice and piano and the second for piano solo. In the latter version the music is preceded by the song texts (no. I Hohe Liebe, no. II Seliger Tod: with texts by Ludwig Uhland, no. III O lieb, so land Du lieben kannst: text by Ferdinand Freiligrath). The third Liebestraum – in the best tradition of nocturnes – is one of the most frequently played piano pieces of all. This is not least because it can be played by very skilled amateurs despite its pianistic bravura (our level of difficulty is 6/7).

Well, this is a set
Although the most famous nocturne is by far the 3rd one, this opus should be seen as a set where one nocturne creates the perfect atmosphere for the next one.I have seen people claiming that the the 1st nocturne is one of the worst Liszt's pieces and I have to strongly disagree with that. While not demanding the monumental virtuosity Liszt usually is associated to, it's a lovely piece for recitals with tricky trills and tremolos. Try it and you'll see.However, thumbs down to Sheet Music Plus customer service: that box for requests when placing an order is simply useless, they don't even bother to read it. I have asked many times for the books to be declared as books, which is what they really are. Nonetheless, SMP insists on declaring it as educational music - whatever it means - generating taxes for foreigners costumers. So be aware that you cannot count of their customer service... at least this time they declared it as documents. Why not books? Isn't it what they sell?

Henle's typical quality
You just can't get it wrong with Henle: the notes are crystal-clear, well printed on good paper...a pleasure to read, and this music does justice to such fine edition!
