The leviathan, a demoniacal sea monster that appears as a dragon or serpent, is considered in the Old Testament to be the embodiment of evil. The defeat of the demon is prophesied in Isaiah 27:1: "On that day the Lord will punish with his cruel sword, his mighty and powerful sword Leviathan that primeval sea-serpent, that writhing serpent Leviathan, and slay the monster of the deep ."The composer's main goal is to create an atmosphere thick with agitation, tumult and extreme tension rather than express specific events musically. The monstrous form of the leviathan slowly emerges from the abyss of primordial sounds at the start of the piece, recalling the eternal conflict betweengood and evil.
Le Léviathan, monstre marin démoniaque, dragon ou serpent, incarne dans l'Ancien Testament les puissances du Mal. La défaite du monstre est prédite par le prophète Esa e en ces termes : « En ce jour, l'Éternel frappera de sa dure, grande et forte épée, le Léviathan, serpent fuyard ; le Léviathan, serpent tortueux ; et il tuera le monstre qui est dans la mer » (Es 27 : 1). En composant Leviathan, Franco Cesarini s'est fixé pour objectif de créer une atmosphère remplie d'agitation, de tumulte et de tension extrême sans toutefois retracer certains événements bibliques spécifiques. L'œuvre s'ouvre sur la lente apparition du monstre émergeant desabysses sur des sons primitifs pour nous rappeler l'existence du conflit éternel qui oppose les forces du Bien celles du Mal.
