This suite is based on folksongs from the Auvergne region in France. I. The Spinner - A girl is singing while spinning. The composer uses a linear composition style (a kind of invention) and a perpetual motion at the same time. The chorus is almost constantly used in counterpoint with the stanza. II. The sad shepherdess - A young shepherdess complains because she cannot go to the fair as she does not have ... a bonnet. III. Drinking Song - This country drinking song is a kind of primitive protest song that runs as follows: 'As long as they do so, by Jove, we will not buy a farm - As long as they do so, by Jove, we will not buy a house.' The chorus in the major key contrasts with the modal stanza. This composition was awarded the First Prize of the German Band Confederation (Bund Deutscher Blasmusikverbande) in Karsruhe, Germany in 1980. It was designed as test piece for the champion sections at the national German band contest in Villingen-Schwenningen that same year.
