Les Feuilles Mortes was written in 1945 for a film. Five years later, Johnny Mercer added English words, Autumn Leaves, and the song became a jazz standard, sung and recorded numerous times, most famously by Marlene Dietrich. The composer's widow, Lily Kosma, donated the royalties to the town of Nice, on condition that a street was named after him. He actually got the Auditorium Joseph Kosma in the Conservatoire of Nice. It's a beautiful song, recalling with sadness the loss of a happy love.
