For Baroque Lute. Composed by Francois Couperin. Edited by Miguel Yisrael. Arranged by Miguel Serdoura. Saddle stitching. Silva de Sirenas. Classical. Score. Ut Orpheus #SDS 10. Published by Ut Orpheus (UT.SDS-10).ISBN 9790215318427. 9 x 12 inches.
As in many of his pieces, Couperin shows a firm affection for the style luthe. Furthermore, his colleague Robert de Visee transcribed numerous of that great harpsichordist's pieces for the theorbo. Incidentally, one can easily imagine both musicians during the intervals of chamber concerts given on behalf of Louis XIV, exchanging musical ideas, masterly achievements and drafting respective transcriptions...
The lute doubtlessly provides additional effects and tone colors to this beautiful piece. The tessitura matches that of the lute perfectly, and it can even played in the original key of B flat major.

A brilliant transcription
Miguel Yisrael is one of the finest lutenists in the world. In this transcription of Couperin's keyboard work, other players get to benefit from Yisrael's considerable musical insights. And yes, it's notated in Baroque lute tablature -- because that's what most of us who play the Baroque lute find easiest to read. If you need Couperin's staff notation for reference, it's easily available.

Les Baricades Misterieuses
The sheet music was unuseable. It was written on a staff but there was no time value to the letters written on the staff. And it was letters, not note heads. I've never seen anything like it. I can't seem to rate it any lower than one star. [Note from SMP: this piece is arranged for Baroque lute, and is notated in the style of the era]
