I composed and arranged"Legend Lost" on the day I got the news that Trumpet legend and bandleader Maynard Ferguson had passed. I wanted to write a tribute, but rather than a high-note feature (there are plenty of those), I chose something a little more introspective. The chart features the Flugelhorn soloist most of the way, but there's also a short Trombone solo to remind us that Maynard also performed on this instrument occasionally. There is a suggested solo during the improvised section, and all rhythm parts are written out. The solo ends with a short quote from Shorty Rogers's show-stopping feature for Maynard with the Stan Kenton Orchestra.
