This is a brass quintet arrangement (2 trpts. in Bb, Horn in F, trombone and tuba) of a debut song for the rock band The Monkees. It became a #1 singles hit on the Billboard Top 100 in 1966. The song’s pulsating rhythm and driving energy is accentuated by the sound of a train whistle, effectively mimicked by brass in several places throughout the arrangement. Although it seems discordant at times, the train whistle evokes a strong almost mournful sentiment which reflect the mood of the lyrics. This intermediate level arrangement would play well with dance party audiences and/or rock, pop concerts.
