Composed by Maurice Jarre. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. This edition: pdf. 20th Century, Film/TV. Individual part. 10 pages. Richard Hirsch #1222679. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1656295).
I offer an arrangement for solo guitar of Lara’s Theme by Maurice Jarre from David Lean’s movie “Doctor Zhivago”. The arrangement begins with a series of natural harmonics reminiscent of a tune from a magical music box with a little ballerina whirling in time to the music. The main melody is played in four part harmony with a blend of melody and broken chords up to and including the key change in the bridge. In the final bars of the bridge the melody switches to being played as a four-stroke tremolo with running bases played by the thumb. The four-stroke tremolo, perhaps new to many classical guitarist and more commonly used in Flamenco guitar playing, makes for a smooth rendering of the melody over the accompanying bases. The arrangement finishes with a jump of an octave in the melody accompanied by natural harmonics in the bases. The piece ends on a high G note played as a natural harmonic on the third string at the fifth fret.
The arrangement is within the ability of advanced intermediate students of fingerstyle or classical guitar.
The four-stroke tremolo may, however, demand extra attention until mastery is achieved. The four-stroke tremolo is executed as follows: thumb (base note) and index finger (first note of the tremolo) are played simultaneously, or at least as close to simultaneously as possible. The following three strokes/notes with the ring, middle, and index finger are played as in a normal classical guitar tremolo. Note that in the four-stroke tremolo the index finger strikes twice in succession, once at the end of a tremolo and once again at the beginning of the next.
The famous Spanish Classical guitarist Narciso Yepes is said to have played the four-stroke tremolo in his interpretation of Francisco Tárrega’s “Recuerdos de la Alhambra”.
