Lampyris Noctiluca — the scientific name for the firefly — was composed by Guido Umberto Sacco in June 2010 for soprano saxophone and piano. Marked from the outset as dreamy, sotto voce, magical, it conjures nocturnal, luminous atmospheres through melodic fragments and shimmering timbres. The dialogue between the two instruments shifts from ethereal, suspended lines to moments of growing tension, culminating in an improvised or composed cadenza by the saxophonist, suggested in a fragmentary style rich in arabesques.
The piece combines expressive freedom with structural clarity, leaving room for the performer’s individuality and inviting exploration of the boundary between composition and improvisation.

L’autore indica, all’inizio del brano, le parole: sognante, sottovoce, magico. La scrittura musicale evoca infatti atmosfere notturne e luminose, fatte di frammenti melodici e riflessi timbrici. Il dialogo tra i due strumenti alterna linee eteree e sospese a momenti di tensione crescente, culminando in una cadenza improvvisata o composta dal sassofonista, suggerita in stile frammentario e ricco di arabeschi.
