It was originally part of a set of pieces for Lent and Holy Week written for SATB choir. The introduction of the choral setting intones the word "Jerusalem" and is also included in the solo introduction, without words, and may be abbreviated or omitted as desired. The accompaniment provides a dissonant backdrop over which the singer intones the hymn. It would also be very effective sung by unison choir and would make a wonderful addition to your Holy Week services.
