La Paloma, composed in the early 1860s by Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier (also spelled Yradier) following a visit to Cuba, remains a beloved classic—particularly in the Spanish-speaking world. Over the decades, it has been adapted and recorded in many languages. (You may recognize the English version, No More, sung by Elvis Presley in the film Blue Hawaii.) It is often cited—alongside Yesterday by The Beatles—as one of the most recorded songs in music history, and certainly the most recorded Spanish song of all time.
The original lyrics, written in Spanish, tell the story of a sailor departing from Havana, leaving behind his sweetheart. Through four heartfelt verses, he dreams of their future wedding and asks her to remember him, even if only as the spirit of a dove returning to her window.
This SSA arrangement features English lyrics that capture the essence of the original story in two verses. Sally Bauer’s elegant piano accompaniment stays true to the habanera style, offering a simple yet expressive foundation that allows the choir’s harmonies to take center stage.
