La fille du régiment, always one of Donizetti's most popular stage works, was first performed at the Théâtre de l'Opéra-Comique in Paris on 11 February 1840. It was composed by Donizetti, to a libretto by Saint-Georges and Bayard, in 1839. Later on, Donizetti prepared an Italian version as well, using a libretto adaptation by Calisto Bassi. The opera enjoyed tremendous success - at the Opéra-Comique alone, more than one thousand performances were given between 1840 and 1917, and is widely staged in the major European and American opera houses.

la fille du regiment
The score is excellent, and complete as far as the original French version is concerned. The blurb accompanying the description of the score implies that it will contain the variations that Donizetti wrote in his Italian version of the opera (which is actually quite different: recitatives no dialogue, and a number of different pieces; an introduction aria for Tonio -- Feste? Pompe?; the lesson scene is somewhat shorter with lower alternates for Maria (which occure throughout the score); and a very elaborate duet for Maria and Toni, which is not included in the score, and is not the same as the one added in the appendix. Since the description mentioned both versions, and both are an essential part of the opera's history, I thought that this edition would include both versions, or at least the added music used in the Italian version, but it didn't. It contains only that written for the French version, and is thus not really a critical edition of the work, as it doesn't include other music written for the work like most critical editions do. However, still a great edition, well printed, and excellent, especially if following along in the Sutherland recording -- and she and her husband always seemed to find little nuggets of extra music never found in the usual printed scores.
