I had wanted to get a really good score of this opera for decades. I have one or two that were put out decades ago (one, the best one prior to this, a German/Italian version) but all of them had their faults. This one, being a critical edition, fixes all those issues. All the music is there, which is not always the case, and the essay prior really does give one super insights into how to perform the music. My introduction to this opera was nothing other than Marilyn Horne singing two of the great arias in the work -- the contralto introductory aria, and the rondo finale. Eventually I was able to listen to a live recording of Horne and Van Stade singing it, which contained most of the music, but I had no clue where to buy the recording (it was part of the university collection) and well, any really good score was even harder to find. A decade later I found the German/Italian edition I have. Still, it was not quite as complete as I wanted. and when this edition finally became available, I snatched it up without a second thought. And I am so glad I did. It also contains many of the variations sung by so many great singers of the past, including Malibran. And what an eye-opener those are. We could learn a great deal about embellishing arias by studying such things. Any rate, a really great buy and a really great score for learning more about Rossini's operas.
