L'apprenti sorcier (1897) by Paul Dukas Cello - Sheet Music

By Paul Dukas

Valentin Erben, former cellist of the legendary Alban Berg Quartet, presents an unusual arrangement of Dukas' ever-popular L'apprenti sorcier for cello solo only, with the option of having a narrator recite Goethe's ballad Der Zauberlehrling to accompany the performance. 'First, I thought of an arrangement for eight cellos, but it became quite clear to me that the true terror of the story only transpires upon reducing the vast orchestral score to one single cello part. This idea itself mirrors the apprentice's foolishness that results in his seemingly unresolvable situation. As Dukas composed his piece along the story of the poem, it seems only logical to add the text to this score.' (Valentin Erben) The arrangements@paladino [1] series features arrangements of famous classics and forgotten works of all times. Its editors are renowned players whose performance experience guarantees that all works in this series are playable as well as enjoyable for professional musicians, amateurs and their audiences.
