On Saturday, August 12, 2000, the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea, killing the entire crew of 118 sailors, many in their late teens and early 20s. The Russian navy made several attempts with antiquated equipment to rescue the sailors. On August 21, Norwegian divers succeeded in opening the rear hatch of the sub to find the entire submarine flooded and no signs of life. The Kursk submarine itself was named after the battle of Kursk, the largest tank battle in history, which from July, 4-13 1943 claimed the lives of 50,000 Germans and 250,000 Soviets. The battle ended the eastern German offensive and turned the tide of the war in the east. Kursk is one of the oldest Russian cities, dating from at least 1032. This composition for orchestra expresses the surge of the sea and the remoteness of the depths. It does not narrate the tragic submarine disaster, but paints a mood. The first half shows the surface of the waters, the second half brings us into the deep. The piece closes with an aura of transcendence.
