Max Bruch (1838-1920) wrote KOL NIDREI, Op. 47 (ALL VOWS) for solo cello and orchestra in 1880. The work presents as an Adagio on two Jewish melodies, the first being the Kol Nidre declaration, which is recited during Yom Kippur's evening service, with the solo cello functioning as the rhapsodic voice of the cantor. The second theme is a quotation from the middle section of Isaac Nathan's arrangement of O Weep for Those that Wept on Babel's Stream, a lyric written by Lord Byron. The work was dedicated to and premiered by cellist Robert Hausmann, who had requested that Bruch write it for him. KOL NIDREI is among Bruch's most frequently performed works, second only to his VIOLIN CONCERTO No. 1. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violoncello.
