Published by Ingo Laufs (A0.1856811).I was asked to write an piece, based on traditional Klezmer Tunes by the opera of Kiel, Germany. They were holding a concert and the principal clarinetist wanted to perform some Klezmer music with orchestra. The outcome ist this medley of three Klezmer Tunes:
- Doina: A prayer from Southeast Europe. In Rumania it is sung outdoors in the mountains when one is alone, to free the soul form pain. The Doina is improvised, melismatic, and free in its rhythmic structure. Therefore, the clarinet should sound like a human voice crying out all its suffering.
- Fryilekh Tants: A happy dance. A joyful dance. After the soul has been cleansed, the piece becomes increasingly joyful. A dialogue with the orchestra begins.
- Varshaver Freilekhs: Another joyful dance from Warsaw. The medley becomes more and more lively. I added a section for improvisation, and it ultimately ends in an ecstatic climax.
