Mahler's Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the death of Children), with text by Friedrich Rückert, is one the most heart-wrenching and depressing song cycles written. Mahler's original orchestration is sparse and soloistic-almost lonely. In this arrangement of the first movement, much of that original instrumentation is preserved but the vocal lines are given to the clarinet in its deepest, lowest register. As always, it is important for musicians to study the original work in order grasp its style along with its context and meaning. This arrangement is great for adding variety to usually bright woodwind programs. A great display of expressivity.
