Kilns at Dawn is a standalone orchestral work and the first movement of Symphony No. 11: The Potteries. Inspired by the industrial heritage of Stoke-on-Trent, the piece evokes the atmosphere of early morning as the kilns awaken and the working day begins.

Opening in a quiet, reflective mood, the music gradually gathers momentum through rhythmic motion and layered orchestral textures, suggesting the steady return of activity and purpose at dawn. The work reflects both the physical landscape and the enduring character of a community shaped by craft and industry.

Although conceived as part of a larger symphony, Kilns at Dawn is written as a fully self-contained orchestral piece and is ideally suited as a concert opener or overture-style work. With a duration of approximately 5½ minutes, it fits comfortably into standard orchestral programmes.

The orchestration has been designed to be accessible for a wide range of ensemble levels, making the piece suitable for youth orchestras, community orchestras, university ensembles, and professional orchestras, while still offering expressive depth for advanced players.

Duration: approx. 5.5 minutes
