I wrote this piece for solo classical (or acoustic) guitar during the Christmas holidays of ’23 in my hometown in Greece.
I was thinking of all the things that weigh on me, mostly external, and at the same time, the things that lift me up and are coming from deep within…and that I have to keep going. The piece was completed soon after.
Exactly one year later, about a month ago, I was in Athens (not my hometown) for another Christmas holiday. I was coming back from a gig carrying my guitar on my back. Suddenly I noticed someone talking to me and I removed my earphones to listen. It was a woman that asked: ‘Is that a guitar?’ I said yes. She said ‘I used to play when I was young and really loved it. Now my daughter plays too.’ She continued ‘Keep doing what you’re doing…and sorry for interrupting you’. I said that it was really my pleasure talking to her and that I wish her and her daughter to continue with guitar and music.
It was a short conversation and I was surprised by the depth and warmth of this encounter with a complete stranger. Sometimes things like that happen in life and they can really give us the motivation to continue, to keep going.
