Three miniatures depicting different dream-states, from the turbulent, psychologically unstable “Freud’s Divan, Vienna, 1936”, to the untethered ethereality of “Adrift in the Void”, to the manic-obsessive “Stuck in the Machine”. The first movement uses the series from Schoenberg’s 4th String Quartet of 1936—a dark period of political instability similar to our own, and in the three movements, contemporary techniques such as harmonics, whistle-tones, and tongue-rams add color and texture to the solo flute line.
