Katatay is a choral work for SATB mixed choir based on poetry by the Peruvian writer and anthropologist José María Arguedas.
The piece was awarded First Prize at the Aimé Painé Composition Competition in Indigenous Languages, organized by ADICORA Alto Valle, in the SATB category, which required the creation of new choral repertoire in the Quechua language.
“Katatay” emerges from the sonic and symbolic impulse of the text: a poem shaped by elemental force, collective memory, and the deep resonance of ancestral language. The choral writing seeks to translate that trembling — that katatay — into texture, rhythm, and harmonic color, exploring contrasts in density, expansive dynamics, and moments of inward resonance.
This work is part of an ongoing artistic commitment to expanding choral repertoire in Indigenous languages, celebrating the phonetic richness, cultural depth, and poetic power of Quechua through a contemporary musical voice.
