'Overture' is the score for the opening sequence of Disney's animated classic, The Jungle Book (1967). The film opens with the storybook device common to many Disney animated features, transporting the audience into a harsh, mysterious and exotic jungle - using a Western musical approach. Also known as the "Jungle Beauty" theme, the melody and groove of the Overture recurs throughout the film as a leitmotif for Mowgli's journey. George Bruns’ composition originated under the title “Serengeti Serenade” as part of the area music for the 1964 World’s Fair.
Composer George Bruns features various instrument solo’s for the melody in this piece, including the oboe, flute and bass flute. With orchestrations by Walter Sheets, the score reflects George Bruns' signature approach to underscoring: ascending and descending melodic lines that guide the listener’s experience.
