This somber setting of this typical joyous hymn reflects moments in life when pain, sorrow, or remorse overtake one’s ability to sing “Joy to the World”. Sometimes, we must sing this lyric despite our current circumstances in hopes of what is to come. Musically, there are plenty of opportunities to work on melodic playing and bow technique through phrasing and dynamic swells. A hemiola is prominent in the last half of the piece between lower strings and middle voices. After some harmonic tension, an accelerando, and a release, the melody peacefully resolves.
