Produced by Bob Ferguson, it was recorded at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 22, 1973, and released on October 15, 1973, by RCA Victor as the lead single and title track of her album *Jolene*.
Widely regarded as a quintessential country song, "Jolene" was ranked No. 217 on *Rolling Stone* magazine's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time," and climbed to No. 63 in the updated 2021 version. The song earned Parton Grammy nominations for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in both 1975 and 1976 for its live rendition.
"Jolene" has been covered by numerous artists in both English and Spanish, including Olivia Newton-John, The White Stripes, Miley Cyrus, and Måneskin. Pentatonix's 2016 version won the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. In 2024, Beyoncé released a reimagined version with altered lyrics and production, which reached the top ten on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Singles Chart.
