Dr. Tom's Charts / Telematic Studios #1455928. Published by Dr. Tom's Charts / Telematic Studios (A0.1897477)."Johnny B. Goode" is Chuck Berry's electrifying rock and roll landmark from 1958, featuring one of the most recognizable and influential guitar introductions ever committed to record. "Johnny B. Goode" is an essential choice for intermediate bands ready to tackle the foundational vocabulary of rock and roll with energy, attitude, and authentic swagger. The guitar work focuses on Berry's signature double-stop licks, propulsive chord riffing, and a vocabulary of phrases that virtually every rock guitarist since has borrowed from, teaching musicians the art of melodic lead playing that is simultaneously rhythmic and expressive. The bass line is driving and relentless, demanding a solid grasp of the blues shuffle feel, consistent eighth-note momentum, and the ability to lock in with the drummer and push the band forward. For singers, "Johnny B. Goode" provides an excellent opportunity to work on storytelling, rhythmic clarity, and delivering a vocal performance with the kind of loose, confident charisma that defines early rock and roll. The song's infectious energy and deep-rooted place in the cultural fabric of popular music make it a guaranteed crowd-igniter that showcases a band's ability to rock together from the very first note.
A NOTE ABOUT DR. TOMS CHARTS
DR. TOMS CHARTS help musicians make more music together. Inspired by the Nashville Number System and the classic Rise Up Singing, these charts emphasize song form with lyrics overlaid on top of evenly spaced chords. These musical roadmaps let you focus on what you love: vocal delivery, groove, harmonies, feel, and more! You can even experiment with different styles and meters.
In the HYBRID chart, the first chord of each line aligns with the first word or syllable on the downbeat, highlighting pickups and delayed entries. Subsequent chords may not align exactly with every word, but once the singer nails the entry, everything locks in! This format might look unfamiliar at first, but evenly spaced chords improve groove and accuracy. The harmonic rhythm guides the melody! For singers, the LYRICS ONLY chart provides all the words with rehearsal cues (intros, verses, bridges, solos).
Keep on jammin!
