This lively SATB arrangement of Jingle Bells brings fresh fun to the familiar tune, highlighting the humorous sleigh-riding tale behind the original 1857 song. With crisp “jing, jingle” motives that imitate sleigh bells and a melody that keeps the story moving, the arrangement balances playful energy with careful attention to ensemble blend. Accessible for a range of choirs—yet rewarding to master—it offers a bright, spirited addition to any winter concert.
First published in 1857 by James Pierpoint, this song was originally entitled, “One Horse Open Sleigh.” Now known as “Jingle Bells,” the text of the popular tune has little to do with the holiday season. Carolers often sing the story without realizing the funny tale of some racing sleigh riders whose journey goes from happy to frustrating when their sleigh slides into a snowbank. This arrangement is all about the enjoyment though. Listen for balance especially within the divisi parts. While the melody is metric and needs syllabic accent, I encourage the choir to stress every note of the accompanying “Jing, Jingles.” These motives are the sleigh bells, which do not have metric stress. This arrangement has been performed by choirs of various levels. While it may be difficult for a less experienced choir, the fun factor inspires a determination to master the notes.Have fun!Sean Pullen.
