It was written by James Lord Pierpont and published under the title "The One Horse Open Sleigh" in 1857. The tune was originally written for Thanksgiving or as a drinking song. Later, it associated with winter and Christmas. The flexible instrumentation enables a mixture of instruments, from small ensemble to orchestra. Essential fingerings and bowings are provided in the string parts. For instruments of Part 2, 3 and 4, the range is within one octave.
