The piece was designed to be played on a soprano recorder (also known as the descant recorder), either as a solo item or to be used in the music classroom by multiple recorder players. The work lies within a reasonable range for the amateur recorder player, with few accidentals or difficult rhythms, and features an exactly recurring rondo theme. As a result, the piece can be used flexibly, as each new rondo episode can be learned and added in subsequent lessons or performances. The piece is also playable on the flute and is provided in two versions. In the first (recorder) version, the flute plays mainly in the lower and middle registers. A second version (of both sheet music and audio) is given one octave higher, and therefore is more taxing and explores the flute's middle and higher range.
