Paul Jeanjean: Clair Matin (Idylle) (Arr. Clarinet in B♭ and String Orchestra)
Paul Jeanjean's Clair Matin (literally "Clear Morning") is a warm, melody-led Idylle in the French Belle Époque spirit: elegant, unhurried, and built for a clarinettist who wants to demonstrate tone, phrase control, and real musical taste. This arrangement replaces the original piano accompaniment with a string orchestra, giving the piece the atmospheric warmth and public-concert presence it naturally calls for.
Jeanjean (1874–1928) is best known for his demanding 18 Études de Perfectionnement, but Clair Matin shows his more lyrical voice. He was principal clarinet at the Monte Carlo Casino Orchestra, and the piece belongs to that world: the kind of stylish, communicative miniature heard in casino and café concert programmes, designed to be immediately pleasing and beautifully shaped. The music unfolds in a sophisticated ABA design, with a contrasting central Intermezzo that lifts the colour and energy before the opening serenity returns.
