Composed by Charles Francois Gounod. Arranged by Adrian Dee. This edition: pdf. Chamber, Opera, Romantic Period. 41 pages. Adrian Dee #1401656. Published by Adrian Dee (A0.1842125).

Gounod’s opera “Romeo et Juliette” premiered in Paris at the Théâtre Lyrique on April 27, 1867. It was a success from the start, following on the tails of the composer’s success with his opera “Faust” in 1859, and has remaining in the standard opera repertoire since then.

Juliette sings this upbeat aria (“I want to live”) in the first act, before any tragedy happens. It is in 3 / 4 time and full of youthful joy. The run time is 3 ½ minutes.

This arrangement is for piccolo, three C-flutes, two altos, bass, and contrabass flutes. The melody is passed around among the upper voices, with the piccolo playing the part of diva, while the lower voices sustain the “oom pah pah.”
