Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Georg Mertens. Baroque,Christian,Concert,World. Score. 21 pages. Georg Mertens #3508753. Published by Georg Mertens (A0.790848).
The transcription of Bach's Lute Suite No 1 created one of the most exciting Duos of the Baroque period. The range of the lute is very similar to the cello. The "players" on the lute are a Duo between thumb and the other fingers - very similar to a Cello Duo. The movements are: Prelude (adagio/presto) - Allemande - Courante - Sarabande - Bourree - Gigue. The Courante is a typical slow French Courante, one of the slowest and most beautiful Bach wrote. The Sarabande is the only movement which needed changes. I changed the long bass notes into a rhythmical bass. The original is a typical movement for one player with notes so long and without rhythm indication, that another player would not know, when the next note starts. If melodies are that slow and don't have a clear pulse, Baroque composers put the pulse into the accompaniment. The famous Bach Air from the D major Suite is a good example for this style, but Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli use the same method. The parts are in some movements written underneath each other, in others the parts are separated, according to what is easier and more necessary to read. Here is the slow Courante fro 2 cellos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d-NJ0BBz3Q.
