The Élégie by Jules Massenet was perhaps one of the most popular melodies in Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. In the typical fashion of Massanet, he originally composed it for a piano cycle "Pièces de Genre, Op. 10 Nº 5", which he then arranged and incorporated into "Les Erinnyes" (The Furies), a play by Leconte de Lisle. The text ‘O doux printemps d’autrefois’ by Louis Gallet was eventually included into Massanet's various arrangements, and this sorrowful yet charming melody has gone on to inspire further arrangements for solos and ensembles by other musicians.
