Bach composed the Italian Concerto in 1735 "nach Italienischem Gusto" – in the Italian style – specifically for a two manual harpsichord. Inspired by the concerto grosso tradition of Corelli and Vivaldi, Bach adopted one of its hallmark features: abrupt dynamic contrasts, achieved on the harpsichord by switching between manuals. In this arrangement for flute and alto flute the two instruments intertwine and complement each other as in a dialogue, while the different timbres of the two flutes bring clarity to the dynamic contrasts as well as to the frequent exchanges of musical roles.
