Composed by Graham Yates. This edition: pdf, streaming. 21st Century, Classical. 19 pages. Graham Yates #1290326. Published by Graham Yates (A0.1728345).
Duration: 4:30.
This little bit of neo-classical nonsense starts, as promised, in C major—and then immediately tests how long it can stay there. It borrows the shape of sonata form, that Enlightenment-era framework for letting musical ideas argue their way toward reconciliation. Here, those ideas get a bit unruly: they pull in different directions, flirt with other keys, and occasionally lose their composure altogether.
The eighth-note pulse is what keeps everything stitched together, even when the harmonies wander or the phrasing gets cheeky. Think of it as equal parts discipline and mischief—a friendly tug-of-war between Classical poise and modern impatience.
It’s in C was written for a composition competition and later premiered on September 27, 2025, at the Armstrong Community Music School in Austin, Texas. The concert was organized by CTC Music and featured Risa Ando and Russell Podgorsek (violins), Meagan Peaco (viola), and Terry Muir (cello).
