Published by Chris Gorman (A0.1809555)."I'll Never Fall in Love Again" is a song written by Lonnie Donegan and Jimmy Currie, and first released by Donegan as a single in 1962. The most commercially successful recording of the song was by Tom Jones in 1967. Upon its first release, Jones' recording reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart but was less successful in the United States where it peaked at number 49. Tom Jones and Lonnie Donegan were close friends who often shared the bill on the UK variety circuit. The hand-off of the song is a famous piece of music lore:
The Recommendation: Donegan invited Jones to his home in Virginia Water and played him his 1962 recording. According to Jones, Donegan told him: "Look, I have this song, you’d sing the pants off it. I’ve recorded it, but I can’t really sing it."
The Recording: Tom Jones recorded the song in July 1967 at Decca Studios in London, produced by Peter Sullivan. Unlike Donegan’s skiffle-tinged original, Sullivan gave the song a "Deep Soul" arrangement with a heavy brass section and a dramatic, soaring crescendo that showcased Jones’ robust baritone.
