This arrangement tells the story behind the song in musical word pictures. It begins with the ringing of a ship's bell as it sinks beneath the waves. The first verse uses a single note melody against broken LH chords that give a picture of "peace like a river" and "sorrow like sea-billows". The second verse takes on a minor tone with the right hand using a thumb melody inside of triplet broken chords and the left hand surging like angry waves in running arpeggio-like passages reminding the performer of the times when "Satan should buffet ... and trials should come".
