This arrangement of JESAIA DEM PROPHETEN is inspired by the instrumental canzona of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. One characteristic of this genre was sectional contrast, with variations in instrumentation, register, texture, meter, tempo and dynamics. In this arrangement the 16 phrases of the cantus firmus (hymn melody) are grouped into sections of varying lengths separated by brief interludes. The cantus firmus itself is unaltered, and motives in the connecting material are derived from the cantus firmus. A motive played by the timpani links the sections.
