Invitation Etude is an original walking bass line study for jazz bass, composed over the chord changes to Invitation by Bronisław Kaper. Unlike a typical improvised bass line, this piece is fully notated and explores angular, intervallic motion alongside Baroque-inspired voice leading and implied counterpoint—ideal for bassists seeking a more advanced and conceptual approach to walking bass.
The opening choruses emphasize disjunct melodic shapes and non-linear pathways through the harmony, including passages that draw directly from Baroque-style linear writing. Several sections feature hemiola-based arpeggiated figures that superimpose a 3/4 feeling over the underlying 4/4 meter, often using open voicings to outline the harmony in a more expansive way. This creates a sense of forward momentum and rhythmic tension while maintaining a clear connection to the form. These elements invite the player to think contrapuntally and rhythmically, rather than purely functionally.
