Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1895519).The Keyboard inventions (BWV 772-5) are part of the collection of works named the Clavierbüchlein (Little Keyboard Book) that JS Bach wrote as exercises for his eldest son. The autographed copy of it (15 pieces in all) is dated Köthen 1723, but Bach may have written them earlier, then later corrected and revised them.
JS Bach used the word 'invention' to mean 'musical idea' or 'theme'. The pieces themselves are exercises in the style and technique of keyboard (primarily harpsichord) music, as Bach himself practised it. In each of the four inventions he produces fairly straightfoward exercises in coordination between the player's hands, the left hand usually following an 'invention' first persented by the right hand. At the same time, each little piece has a charm and lilt of its own, thanks to Bach's unfailing genius.
In this transcription, the Violin is the 'right hand' and the Cello the 'left hand'. Coordination between the two players is exceptionally important here for the music to 'flow'. Enjoy!
