John Blanken composed Intrada & Wilhelmus in 2002.The title speaks for itself. It's an introduction to the national anthem of The Netherlands; Wilhelmus. In this piece the national anthem is heared two times followed by a short postlude.
De titel van Intrada & Wilhelmus spreekt voor zich: een feestelijke introductie gaat vooraf aan het Wilhelmus. De in de introductie gebruikte motieven zijn direct afgeleid van het lied en komen afwisselend naar voren,als het ware gescandeerd door het hele orkest. De introductie besluit met de slotzin van het lied, zodat duidelijk is dat het Wilhelmus begint - voor het geval het de bedoeling is dat de aanwezigen meezingen.De bewerkingbevat twee coupletten van het volkslied. Het eerste is een vierstemmige instrumentatie. Het tweede couplet is groots van opzet: de melodie wordt omlijst met signalen, waardoor een imposant geheel ontstaat. Dit laatste couplet gaatnaadloos over in het naspel, dat weer dezelfde motieven bevat als het begin - en waarmee het werk net zo krachtig sluit als het begon.
