"Intonations" is a duo for cello and piano, lasting approximately half an hour.
The rhythmic and tonal coordination between the two instruments has the following distinctive features:
The music of "Intonations" is based not only on precisely corresponding notes, but also on notes that are inherently of the same pitch, yet are necessarily intoned differently by each instrument.
This is due to the natural harmonic series of the cello on the one hand, and the equal temperament of the piano on the other. These subtle tonal differences, when combined, create a suggestive rhythmic flow of shifting and interwoven time signatures.
