Composed by Charles Decker. This edition: pdf. Contemporary, Instructional. Educational Exercises. 25 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #4112429. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.817142).

Cited by the "International Trumpet Guild Journal" as "a great introduction to the world of atonal music", "Intermediate Serial Studies for Trumpet" bridges the gap between tonal music and more difficult atonal literature with 20 short studies.
Using twelve-tone technique, the studies focus on intervals of seconds progressing to thirds, fourths, tritones, fifths, sixths and sevenths. Melodic treatment varies from lyrical to martial with 14 different time signatures but beat subdivisions are not complex to facilitate precise rhythmic execution.

A Necessary Evil
My first introduction to atonal music was back in 1966 when I was a trumpet student at Eastman School of Music. I joined the New Music Ensemble. It was an eyeopener! And a shock to play music that didn't have a tonal center that I could relate to. As a professional player I have come to enjoy playing music by Charles Ives, Stockhausen and others who refused to follow the rules One thing that was missing in my education was a book like this. I have worked out of a similar but very difficult book by Verne Reynolds. Mr. Decker has chosen a more friendly and inviting approach to serial music with very worthwhile introductions to each series of notes used. Like it or not, modern trumpet players need to be familiar with this style of music writing so that come the day you're invited to play in a chamber ensemble that plays this style you won't be lost and/or intimidated. Do yourself a favor and get this gem of a book and get outside your comfort zone, prepare for your future.
