Interlude No. 1, for flute and piano is conceived as a vivid musical dialogue in which ideas constantly emerge, transform and respond to one another. Although the flute often takes a leading role, the work avoids the traditional soloist/accompaniment relationship in favor of a more fluid and theatrical interaction between both instruments.
Rather than relying on conventional thematic development, the piece unfolds through a succession of contrasting gestures, atmospheres and characters, often connected through imitative contrapuntal textures — a characteristic feature of David Magrané’s musical language.
Bright, energetic passages alternate with more introspective moments, creating a continuous play of light and shadow throughout the work. In spirit, the piece approaches the expressive world of the Baroque doctrine of the affections, inviting performers to engage with the music in a vivid, flexible and highly communicative way.
