Indigo Blues is a laidback swing (quarter = 72) with an expressive melody in A minor that croons above lush colors of 7th and 9th chords, introducing students to jazz chords that are labeled throughout. The form is easy to grasp: a a' transition b a'' codetta. The “b” section tonicizes the VI (F). This 38-measure piece is easily attainable for late intermediate or early advanced students. I wrote Indigo Blues while studying jazz piano composition with Kim Portnoy, who studied under Herbie Hancock.
