Composed by Composer. This edition: pdf. 21st Century, Classical, Latin. Score and part. 32 pages. Silver Sickle Publications #1454863. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.1896418).
In the Middle of the Night (...after half a bottle of whiskey) was originally written in 2025 for the remarkable classical guitarist Zoran Dukic, following an evening filled with long conversations, music, laughter, and, indeed, approximately half a bottle of whiskey. The work embraced that atmosphere openly, celebrating spontaneity, virtuosity, friendship, and the unpredictable logic of late-night inspiration.
This version, arranged for guitar and piano, was tailored specifically for the duo of Dimitris Kotronakis and David L. Magnussen, and will receive its premiere in Denmark in June 2026. The addition of the piano transforms the original solo work into something larger in scale and richer in color. What began as a fast-moving, theatrical solo piece now expands into a fuller and more dynamic musical conversation between two performers. The piano amplifies the guitar's harmonic world, adds unexpected weight and resonance, and allows moments of lyricism and humor to emerge with even greater contrast and character. Works for guitar and piano of this kind remain relatively rare within the classical guitar repertoire, giving the piece a distinctive place in contemporary chamber music programming. The interaction between the two instruments creates an atmosphere that is at once virtuosic, playful, lyrical, and occasionally mischievous. Fast passages collide with sudden tenderness, rhythmic swagger gives way to introspection, and abrupt turns keep both performers and audiences alert throughout its five-minute journey.
The piece was conceived almost like an encore that accidentally evolved into a complete work: entertaining, energetic, and unapologetically communicative. It can serve naturally as the closing work of a concert, leaving listeners exhilarated and smiling after the final chord fades.
At its heart, In the Middle of the Night (...after half a bottle of whiskey) is a reminder that music does not always emerge from solemnity. Sometimes it arrives late at night through friendship, stories, improvisation, exhaustion, inspiration—and perhaps most importantly, the realization that after all, having drinks alone is not nearly as much fun.
