Program Notes

I grew up hearing my mother singing this song in our home as she did her chores with her beautiful, soprano voice. She drew the listener in with her expressive phrasing and colorful timbres. So, it didn’t surprise me when I woke up this morning with that hymn in my mind. As it played in my head, I knew that I wanted to use this hymn to arrange for my piano student, Zachary Kim, to play in church.

I also chose the Key of Db Major, because this is my mother’s favorite key. She taught herself how to play the piano because her family couldn’t afford to pay for piano lessons. Thus, I dedicate this arrangement to her, my mother, Ruth Cardillo Robinson, a singing missionary from the Philippines.

It was Charles Austin Miles (1868 – 1946) who wrote this popular gospel hymn in 1912. He was a Pharmacist from Philadelphia who became the editor and manager of Hall-Mack Publishers for 37 years. He wrote over 398 songs. His best-known hymn, "In The Garden," also known as, "I Come to the Garden Alone," has been recorded in 210 hymnals and recorded numerous times.

According to Miles' great-granddaughter, the song was written "in a cold, dreary and leaky basement

in Pitman, New Jersey that didn't even have a window in it let alone a view of a garden." The song

was first published in 1912 and popularized during the Billy Sunday evangelistic campaigns of the

early twentieth century by two members of his staff, Homer Rodeheaver and Virginia Asher.

Lyrics

I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses; And the voice I hear, falling on my ear, The Son of God discloses.

Refrain: And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice Is so sweet the birds hush their singing; And the melody that He gave to me Within my heart is ringing.

I'd stay in the garden with Him
Tho' the night around me be falling;
But He bids me go; thro' the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling.

"It is as a writer of gospel songs I am proud to be known, for in that way I may be of the most

use to my Master, whom I serve willingly although not as efficiently as is my desire." *C.Austin Miles
