Written across the afternoon and evening of Guy Fawkes 2025 as (what I imagine would be) some highlight or focal point of the then upcoming Auckland Viola Society Day, I long wanted this short work to provide something we are all in need of: communication; ideally the good kind. But also, to celebrate. Celebrating the Society itself that so kindly commissioned this new work for which the composer is humbly grateful.
We often speak without listening and perhaps that is what happens here in this In[ter]vention. You’ll forgive the bastardising of two good words, one musical and one perhaps about sneaking in. The three voices meander their way through an attempt at listening while mostly speaking, though some mutual understanding is temporarily reached. Those with an ear for true Inventions (this is not one) might pick out the odd line that part of the works’ namesake inspiration takes so greedily from. And there is a more hidden melodic line known only to the composer and a few which persists, perhaps intervenes, in most of the composer’s output.
