IM KRAPFENWALD'L (IN KRAPFEN'S WOODS), Op. 336 is a polka that was originally performed under the title IM PAVLOVSK WALDE (IN THE PAVLOVSK WOODS). Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) composed the work for his Russian tour, and it premiered in PAVLOVSK on September 6, 1869. As the work reportedly resulted in several encores during performance in Russia, Strauss felt it best to retitle the work in a way better suited to his Viennese audience. Krapfenwald is a popular wooded area near the scenic village of Grinzing. Under the new title, the cheerful work calls for bird whistles to highlight the sound of the Viennese Woods. The premiere under the new title took place on June 24, 1870, at the Volksgarten in Vienna, Strauss' younger brother Eduard conducting. Instrumentation: 1+1(Picc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(3): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): CS (Pno-Cond) in set. This edition has no full score. Reprint of the transcription by Max Schönherr.
